The phone-free evening

This is about a habit and a few objects. Nothing more.
The habit: after a set hour, the phone goes in another room. The evening is yours to fill. This page makes no promises about what it does for you. It’s an evening, set up on purpose.
The habit, in three small rules
- Pick an hour. Same time each day.
- Put the phone somewhere you can’t reach from the chair.
- Have the next thing ready before the hour comes.
Rule three is where objects help. Here are four, each named by lists we counted. We didn’t test them. Prices are rough bands, not live Amazon prices.
Four objects
To read: Amazon Kindle (basic)
Amazon Kindle (basic): named by 8 lists. Rough price: $100-$300.

A light, pocket-friendly e-reader with a glare-free screen and weeks of battery. Five of the 8 lists tested it hands-on. It’s the most-named of the four.
To write: Leuchtturm1917 Notebook
Leuchtturm1917 Notebook: named by 5 lists. Rough price: under $50.

A hardcover notebook with numbered pages and an index up front. Three of the 5 lists tested it hands-on.
To write with: Lamy Safari Fountain Pen
Lamy Safari Fountain Pen: named by 5 lists. Rough price: under $50.

A German fountain pen with a tough plastic body and a triangular grip. A favorite first fountain pen. Three of the 5 tested it hands-on.
To see by: BenQ e-Reading LED Desk Lamp
BenQ e-Reading LED Desk Lamp: named by 3 lists. Rough price: $100-$300.

A desk lamp made for lighting a page without glare on the screen or paper. All 3 lists that name it tested it hands-on.

Read these numbers straight
None of the four is a top-ten pick. They’re named by 3 to 8 lists each. The typical product on this site is named by 4. The lamp is on the low side, with 3. We say so plainly.
Two are under $50 and two are in the $100-$300 band. The notebook and pen are the cheap way in. The Kindle and the lamp are the bigger buys.
What owners say about the two bigger buys:
My 7 year old kindle still seems to work just fine
— redisman, Kindle owner for 7 years (Hacker News, 2020; source)
I have a 16 year old Kindle (Keyboard) that Amazon actually decided to turn into a brick last month…
— thg, owner of a 16-year-old Kindle Keyboard, an older model, on Amazon ending support for it (Hacker News, 2026; source)
I’ve had the BenQ WiT reading desk lamp for nearly five years, and it has been almost flawless until now.
— omnee, BenQ WiT reading lamp owner for nearly five years (Hacker News, 2026; source)
It could be improved with some design changes to reduce lateral glare…
— omnee, same owner, on the same lamp (Hacker News, 2026; source)
An evening, in order
This is a suggestion, not a study.
- First: read. A chapter on the Kindle, under the lamp.
- Then: write. A few lines in the notebook, in pen. What happened. What’s next. Anything.
- Last: lamp off.
And on the writing pair:
I also use a Leuchtturm1917 120g notebook which is perfect for writing and sketching with a fountain pen.
— owobeid, Leuchtturm1917 notebook user, no length given (Hacker News, 2025; source)
Lamy Safari fountain pen - I got tired of plastic pens and wanted to try fountain pens with a converter.
— eb0la, Lamy Safari owner, no length given (Hacker News, 2024; source)
Why these four
They’re all small, quiet things that sit well with a slow hour. They’re also the sort of objects lists keep naming for lasting. We count the lists. We don’t promise a better evening.
